University Hospital Geelong (UHG) services a catchment area of over 350,000 people, covering the city of Geelong and extending to the Victorian southwestern region. 

Services delivered to the community include emergency and acute, mental health, primary care, community services, aged care and sub-acute/rehabilitation.

The UHG Intensive Care is a 24-bed level III adult, mixed medical, surgical, cardiothoracic ICU, and a level II paediatric ICU. The ICU team is committed to the values and goals of Barwon Health and to the provision of world-class, person-centred care to critically ill patients and their families.  

UHG has been designated as a tier 2 ECMO service since 2020, currently the only regional ECMO provider in Victoria. The ICU led ECMO service was established in 2011 and offers all forms of ECMO, including V-V, V-A and ECPR. All aspects of ECMO are provided including initiation, management and weaning. 

Barwon Health’s multi-specialty ECMO team led by Intensivists includes, ECMO Nurse Specialist, Perfusionists, Cardiothoaracic surgeons, Vascular surgeons and Cardiologists. We deliver a comprehensive in-house education and credentialing program which includes theoretical, practical and simulation-based training and assessment in-line with the VECMOS recommendations. Oversight of our service is coordinated by our ECMO management committee.
